The microclimate of the hive and the biological condition of the colony

The microclimate of the hive and the biological condition of the colony

Pchelovodstvo 94(3): 19-21

Oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations were found to depend on the stage of the colony cycle, and external conditions; these factors also affected temperature and humidity. The CO2 level varied inversely with O2 level; concentrations were not the same in all parts of the hive. Concentration of O2 was highest in summer, during greatest activity, when CO2 concentration in the centre of the nest was only 0.1-1.0%; it was 4-6% higher in winter.
