Oil palm area amounted to 590,000 ha. in 1976, and palm oil accounted for 9.4% of total Malaysian export earnings. Johore, Panang and Selangor comprise 78% of peninsular Malaysia's oil palm area and supply 1/3rd of the world's palm oil. Production methods are described; the application of fertilizer, pesticide and herbicide and careful harvesting are very important. The bunches of fruit are sterilized under steam, then pressed to release the crude oil, dehydrated and cleaned.
