The role of blood-sucking insects in the epizootology of Omsk haemorrhagic fever

A study was made of the blood-sucking Diptera in a natural focus of Omsk haemorrhagic fever in the Troitskaya - Karasuk area of the Novosibirsk region of the Soviet Union in the spring and summer of 1968. It was found that Ceratopogonids were dominant, with Culicoides riethi Kieff. forming 80% of biting midges captured and C. pulicaris (L.) 17.5%. The insects attacked at temperatures of 7-40 deg C, and were most active at 16-23 deg C.
