The use of bark waste as a substrate in horticulture

, : The use of bark waste as a substrate in horticulture. Acta Horticulturae (37): 2003-2012

The physical and chemical properties of bark from various hardwood sources are discussed and results are presented of bioassays to test phytotoxicity to seedlings. Chrysanthemum plants in a 2/3 bark and 1/3 sand medium grew better, in terms of dry weight, where the bark was derived from Platanus and Populus spp. than in that from Celtis and Acer spp. Rooting was also faster in media containing either of the first 2 barks.
