Physical and chemical analyses are shown for the horticultural grade of brown coal (the majority of particles being less than 5 mm in diameter, with no more than 10% by weight of large particles). This coal contains sufficient available S, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mo and B for growing lettuces, tomatoes and cucumbers. Sphagnum peat was compared with coal (fertilized with N, P, K and Cu) for these crops. Lettuce yields were similar in both media.
