In a study using the initial populations Teko Yellow and Natal Yellow Horsetooth, the ten highest-yielding male parents were selected from 100-121 test crosses for each cycle of testing, selection being effected either according to a system of stratified random sampling using random numbers, or visually on the basis of the agronomic characters plant vigour, resistance to lodging and freedom from disease.
