Unequal crossing over at the rRNA locus as a source of quantitative genetic variation

Unequal crossing over at the rRNA locus as a source of quantitative genetic variation

Nature, UK 272(5648): 80-81

From a base stock that was homozygous for X-linked genes, 3 lines of Drosophila melanogaster were selected for high and 3 lines were selected for low abdominal bristle number. In 2 of the lines selected for low bristle number, the females showed a sudden increase in selection response between generations 18 and 21 and between generations 33 and 37 resp. The increased response was shown to result from the fixation of bobbed (bb) alleles in the X-chromosome.
