A comparative trial of oxantel-pyrantel and mebendazole in multiple helminth infection in school children

A comparative trial of oxantel-pyrantel and mebendazole in multiple helminth infection in school children

Drugs 15((Suppl. 1)): 11-15

In 17 children in Selangor, Malaysia, a single dose of 10 to 20 mg/kg body-weight of a combination of oxantel and pyrantel pamoates reduced faecal egg counts by 100% for Ascaris, 96.6% for Trichuris and 79.3% for hookworm (all assumed to be Necator americanus). In a controlled trial in 51 children, 25 were given oxantel-pyrantel at 10 to 20 mg/kg on 3 consecutive days and 26 were given mebendazole at 100 mg twice daily for 3 days. Both drugs gave 100% cure rates for Ascaris.
