A new method to determine self-fertility in plum varieties

, : A new method to determine self-fertility in plum varieties. Acta Horticulturae: 155-162

The pistil is longest in semi-self-fertile varieties and somewhat shorter in self-fertile ones; fully and practically self-sterile varieties have short pistils. Self-sterile plums have most stamens. The ratio stamen number : pistil length gives some indication of degree of self fertility. Examination of 2940 flowers demonstrated a significant negative correlation between pistil length and stamen number.
