The growing space of individual sugar beet plants was characterized by the stand length (row length associated with an individual plant) and stand index (a measure of the evenness of plant distribution). Root wt. increased by 6-14 g/cm increase in stand length; uneven spacing decreased individual root wt. by 180-385 g. Beet sown to a stand used the growing space better than that sown more closely and thinned.
