This thesis outlines methods for collecting simuliids and for their dissection and examination, gives details of the West African bioclimatic zones and reviews the 8 sibling species which comprise the Simulium damnosum complex in West Africa. Observations are presented on the collection of S. damnosum from riverside vegetation at many localities and from rocky caves at Papara in Mali. S. damnosum females from savanna areas had generally higher parity rates than those from forest areas.
