Abattoir survey of bovine paramphistomiasis in North Queensland

Abattoir survey of bovine paramphistomiasis in North Queensland

Australian Veterinary Journal 55(8): 402

A map shows the prevalence (high, moderate or low) of bovine paramphistomiasis based on the examination of the rumen and reticulum of 17 872 cattle at two abattoirs from September 1977 to February 1979. Generally, only Calicophoren calicophorum was present and only 2 animals were found with both immature and adult flukes in the rumen-reticulum. Immature flukes were found only in the rumen and they were not present in animals slaughtered in the summer. Prevalence and incidence rates usually fell in spring and summer and increased in autumn and winter. From September 1977 to February 1979, the rumina and reticula of 17 872 cattle from North Queensland, Australia, killed in Townsville were examined for paramphistomes. Only Calicophoron calicophorum was present. The prevalence rates (high, moderate and low) among cattle from different parts of North Queensland are shown on a map. Immature flukes (found only in the rumen) were absent from cattle killed in summer. In general, prevalence and incidence decreased in spring and summer and increased in autumn and winter.
