Activity of enzymes in the queen's spermatheca

Various sections of the spermatheca of queen honeybees are stained histochemically to show the presence of succinate dehydrogenase and acid phosphatase. It is suggested that the spermatheca is not simply a passive reservoir for storing spermatozoa, but that it is an active organ in which enzyme-mediated biochemical processes occur. Spermatozoa within the spermathecal cavity show a high metabolic activity.
