The effectiveness of the bulk tank agitator in preparing milk for sampling and how it minimizes delay and reduces error are discussed. Since prolonged agitation can cause milk fat damage, intermittent agitation is considered better than continuous or adjustable speed agitation. Tests have shown that a representative milk sample can be obtained from bulk tanks fitted with an intermittent agitator controlled by a time switch set to give 1-min agitation after a 15 or 30 min rest period.
