Brucellosis in sheep and goats in Cyprus

Brucellosis in sheep and goats in Cyprus

Comparative Immunology, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases 2(1): 99-106

The incidence of brucellosis in sheep and goats was determined by intrapalpebral allergic skin tests. Flocks harbouring reactors were then checked serologically and it was concluded that the skin test was reliable for screening purposes. A policy of confiscation and slaughter of infected animals (with adequate compensation), disinfection of pens, prohibitions on animal movement and periodic retesting of flocks has reduced the incidence of brucellosis to 0.06% in both species. The prospects for total eradication of the disease from the island are considered good.
