Characteristics and possibilities for use of piperophos against barnyard grass in various rice varieties

The response of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and several rice cvs. to piperophos was studied under growth chamber and glasshouse conditions. Twice as much of the chemical was taken up by the coleoptile of the weed as by the roots. The herbicide remained in the upper soil layers and showed no tendency to leach. Application during rice emergence or at the 1-leaf stage was as effective as pre-em. treatment, but it caused some injury at the high rates tested (7 and 10 litres/ha).
