Coronavirus-like particles present in simian faeces

Coronavirus-like particles present in simian faeces

Veterinary Record 104(8): 168-169

Faeces were obtained from rhesus and cynomolgous monkeys with and without gastroenteritis, and from asymptomatic marmosets. All the animals were in closed communities. Coronavirus-like particles were seen in faeces from 3 of 6 rhesus and 18 of 20 cynomolgous monkeys, but not in 6 marmosets. Repeated sampling of 4 cynomolgous monkeys over many weeks revealed persistent excretion. Projections consisting of sperical or teardrop-like knobs were attached to the viral particles by thin stalks.
