Development of spring wheat cv. Solo grown to maturity in nutrient sol. differed from that of similar plants grown in soil. The effects of reducing nutrient supply at different growth stages were monitored by assessing chlorophyll content, CO2 assimilation, DM and N content. Reducing the total nutrient supply during the grain filling period reduced the flag leaf chlorophyll content and CO2 assimilation capacity. There was a retarded response to reduced nutrient conc. in the vegetative phase. A nutritional design for growing spring wheat in water culture was proposed.
