Salmonella typhimurium His revertants were used to measure indirectly hepatic enzyme activity which converts N-2-fluorenylacetamide (FAA) to mutagens in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed for 4 months on a basal diet supplemented with 5 or 20% beef tallow or maize oil and 0.03% FAA. Control rats were given a diet with 5 or 20% tallow or maize oil or pelleted chow. After the 1st 4 months FAA was removed from the diet and feeding continued for another 4 months.
