Digestion of nitrogen and energy in the forestomachs of sheep fed roughage/cereal diets

Digestion of nitrogen and energy in the forestomachs of sheep fed roughage/cereal diets

Record of Agricultural Research 26: 69-73

Twelve ewes 18 months old weighing 40 to 45 kg, with rumen cannulae and re-entrant cannulae in the proximal duodenum were used in a balance trial: 4 sheep were withdrawn during the experiments. The sheep were given pelleted feed once daily. After 4 weeks faeces and urine were collected for 7 days then samples were taken through the duodenal cannula for 24 h. There were 2 diets, both with urea 5 kg/t. Group 1 ate 586 g DM daily of a diet of ground straw, ground barley and grass meal 4:2:3.
