Effect of gluing conditions on veneer finger-joint bond quality for laminated-veneer lumber

Finger-joints were made under various temperatures, assembly times and pressing times from 6.4-mm thick laboratory-peeled western hemlock veneer and PF/resorcinol resin. Av. tensile strength of the joints was 78% that of unjointed veneer. Preheating prior to finger-jointing resulted in a marked increase in initial tensile strength and wood failure. Length of time between pressing and testing had a large effect on bond quality.
