Effect of nitrogen and plant population on yield and quality of pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum Schum.)

In a field trial during Oct. 1971-April 1972, with pearl millet grown for fodder, the effect of N at 0, 100, 200 or 300 kg/ha and of plant populations of 10, 20, 30 or 40 plants/m of row was studied. P, K and lime were also applied at sowing. Pearl millet was sown in rows 30 cm apart and N as urea was broadcast in 4 split applications, at sowing and after each of the 1st 3 cuts. Applied N increased total DM yield. The calculated highest DM yield (18.4 t/ha) corresponded to 293 kg N/ha.
