Effect of nitrogen and potassium fertilizing on some chemical properties of the soil, and on the growth and fruit-bearing capacity of apple trees. 1. Effect of fertilizing on soil acidity and on the content of humus and nutrient elements

Roczniki Nauk Rolniczych, A 103(1): 49-64

In 8-year experiments on an orchard soil (sol lessive developed from light boulder clay), nitrogen fertilizers were applied as ammonium nitrate at 40, 140 or 240 kg/ha, and potassium fertilizers at 50, 175 or 300 kg K2O/ha. The effects of nitrogen were quiker and clearer than those of potassium. Under nitrogen treatment, the pH of the A1 horizon had significantly decreased after 1.5 years; in subsequent years it increased further, and also affected were the deeper horizons (30-45 cm).
