Effect of nitrogen fertilization on the yield and quality of spring barley

In a field trial in 1974-7 at Borovce, 6 spring barley (4 only in 1975-7) were given no fertilizer or 39 kg P + 133 kg K + 0, 30, 60 or 90 kg N/ha. In 1974-6 the proportion of large grains (> 2.5 mm) was increased from 67.2% with no fertilizer to 71.3% by PK and further to 73.8% by 30 kg N + PK, but higher rates of N decreased it to 65.7%. Grain contents of protein, starch and malt extract were affected very slightly, if at all, by applied fertilizer.
