Effect of nitrogen, frequency and height of cutting on carbohydrate reserves and production of dry matter from Para grass (Brachiaria mutica)

In plot trials, Para grass was given 0 or 100 kg N/ha, cut to 0 or 10 cm at 25-, 35-, or 45-day intervals and DM, tiller wt. and number/plant and root and stem base nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) content was measured. DM production was highest with added N, 10 cm stubble ht. and cuts at 45 days. Production in the rainy season was increased during the Nortes NSC content was not affected by added N and was higher with frequent than with few cuts and during the Nortes than at other times.
