Effect of rate and date of seeding on yield and yield components of two winter wheat cultivars grown in Ontario

Winter wheat Fredrick and Yorkstar were sown at 34, 67, 101, 134 or 168 kg/ha on or near 24 Sept., 9 Oct. and 23 Oct. in 1973-5. Yields were highest at 134 kg seed/ha. Sowing rate did not affect lodging. Number of ears/ha was positively correlated with yield/ha and negatively correlated with number of grains/ear. As sowing rate increased, the increase in the number of ears/ha was greater than the accompanying decrease in grains/ear, giving a net overall yield increase.
