Effect of slow-release nitrogen fertilizers on the growth and yield of flooded rice

The slow-release N fertilizers urea formacetaldehyde (UFA), dimethylolurea (DMU) and hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) were compared with urea in a pot experiment with flooded rice. All 3 increased max. tiller number/hill compared with unfertilized plants. Plants which received HMT showed continuous tillering and green leaf colour until maturity. The main effect of all the N treatments on yield components was on number of panicles/plant. The slow-release forms of N were as effective as urea.
