White Leghorn egg-type pullets, reared up to 18-wk of age on litter floors, were randomly assigned to 16 X 18 in cage units at 2, 3 and 4 birds/cage. There were 72 birds at each cage density for eight 28-day periods. Increasing the stocking density had no detrimental effect on hen-day egg production, body weight, egg weight and feed efficiency. However, mortality among caged layers increased as the stocking density increased.
