Effect of the relative direction of the grain on the strength of glued joints of wood

Effect of the relative direction of the grain on the strength of glued joints of wood

Lesnoi Zhurnal (4): 161-163

Planed pieces of pine wood were glued together in pairs so that the grain of the two pieces was at angles of 0 deg (parallel), 30 deg , 60 deg , and 90 deg (transverse). The glues used were a PVA and a PF adhesive, bonding being done at room temp. with a pressure of 4 plus or minus 1 kgf/cm2. Double-sided cleaving tests were then made to determine bond strength, the approach speed of the wedges being 30 mm/min. The results are shown in tables and graphs.
