Effect of the scientific and technical revolution on character of work in cattle husbandry

Character of work and qualifications of workers in (i) 50 traditional farms with 80-180 cows/farm and a total of 419 workers were compared with those in (ii) 7 specialized commercial farms with 400-980 cows/farm and a total of 185 workers. The mean age of workers in (i) was 47 yr vs. 38 yr in (ii). The % of women in (i) was 53.2 vs. 34.3 in (ii). The % of workers with 1, 2, 3 or >3 special skills was 40.1, 56.1, 3.4 and 0.4 resp. in (i) vs. 24.8, 12.9, 18.8 and 43.5 in (ii).
