In a field trial in 1971-5 at Most na Ostrove in SW Slovakia, sunflower and winter rape were sown at catch crops (a) early (after harvest of fodder oats) or (b) late (after harvest of winter cereals) in summer and were irrigated at 60% field capacity. With (a), yields of DM and N substances were higher in sunflower (10.98 and 1.23 t/ha, resp.) than in rape (5.41 and 1.09 t) because the high summer temp. retarded the growth of rape.
