To filtered rumen fluid obtained before the morning feed from adult merino sheep adapted for over a year to a protein-free diet, about 800 g/day to maintain bodyweight, were added substrate and thiamin dichloride to give 1 of 5 concentrations of the vitamin, from 0.3 to 2.1 mu g/ml. After incubation for 6 h net microbial growth increased significantly with thiamin in excess of 0.6 mu g/ml.
