Three Black Pied bullocks 9 months old fitted with rumen cannula and duodenal re-entrant cannulae were in 2 periods fed on a ration of 5 kg briquettes from wheat straw treated with sodium hydroxide (1st period) or normal wheat straw (2nd period) together with 3.5 kg mixed feeds and 0.3 kg sunflower oilmeal. Daily intake of DM during the 2 periods was 6.29 and 6.38 kg. During the first hour after the morning feeding pH of rumen content was 6.3 to 7.0 and 6.3 to 6.6.
