Effect of varying energy and protein intake on nitrogen balance in adults engaged in heavy manual labour

The effect of varying energy and protein intake on nitrogen (N) balance in adult men engaged in heavy manual labor was investigated. The subjects were in a low socioeconomic group. Low protein and energy levels resulted in negative N balance, and urea index was decreased. Urinary excretion of hydroxyproline was found to be sensitive to dietary protein level, but not to energy. Moderate and inconsistent changes in plasma amino acid levels were reported.
