In Large White pigs given a diet deficient in vitamin D from weaning at 5 weeks old to 7 or 8 weeks of age, calcium-binding protein decreased by 33% in the proximal duodenum and by 70% in the mid-jejunum below that of controls given a normal diet and was undetectable in the distal ileum. In blood Ca decreased significantly and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol was undetectable.
