In field trials in 1969-70 at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi on a sandy clay loam soil, transplanted 4-wk-old rice seedlings were subjected to submergence to 4.0 cm or alternate wetting and drying, and 5 N rates (0-200; kg N/ha) were applied by 3 different methods. With submergence there were significantly higher grain yields of 5.8 t/ha compared with 4.16 t/ha with the wetting/drying treatment.
