Effect of within-row spacing on yield and quality of four imported strawberry varieties

When four varieties were grown for two successive seasons between 1973 and 1975 at Cairo, using within-row spacings of 20, 30 and 40 cm, (1) Fresno gave the highest average early and total yields (March/April and March/June, respectively) taken over both seasons, (2) the highest yield in all varieties was given at a spacing of 20 cm, (3) Tioga had the largest fruits, followed by Fresno, (4) variety and spacing were independent with respect to their effect on fruit size, (5) earlier fruits were larger and (6) Surprise des Halles had the highest content of total soluble solids.
