The results of storage trials on apples and pears are presented. A high level (20%) of CO2 for the first 10 days of controlled-atmosphere storage improved storage quality in the apple cvs Grand Alexander, Jonathan and Golden Delicious and the pear Spadona. However, the treatment was unsuitable for Jonathan fruit from trees with a storage history of internal browning and there was no beneficial effect on Orleans apples from trees sprayed with ethephon or on mature Delicious.
