Abstract
German Black Pied (GBP) cows were inseminated with Chiana, Marche, Romagna and Piedmont semen, and the carcass characters of the crossbred progeny were compared with those of purebred GBP, Charolais X GBP, German Simmental X GBP and German Black Pied Dairy cattle. For progeny of the 8 breed groups (16/group), slaughtered at 450 days of age, warm carcass weight averaged 283.0, 269.5, 180.2, 283.5, 262.4, 278.1, 274.4 and 234.6 kg resp., dressing percentage 62.12, 60.90, 60.69, 63.29, 58.59, 61.04, 60.64 and 57.75, weight of valuable cuts 55.3, 51.8, 54.6, 54.7, 49.4, 53.1, 52.0 and 43.8 kg, percentage of bone in the right half-carcass 18.9, 18.9, 18.2, 15.1, 18.3, 17.2, 17.2 and 19.9, weight of kidney fat 3.6, 4.7, 3.7, 4.1, 6.0, 6.0, 5.4 and 5.0 kg, and protein percentage in the longissimus dorsi muscle 20.76, 21.06, 20.88, 20.74, 21.07, 20.94, 21.00 and 21.06. For progeny (10/group) slaughtered at 550 days of age, warm carcass weight averaged 344.0, 345.4, 363.8, 360.0, 335.4, 372.6, 339.4 and 316.8 kg resp., dressing percentage 61.39, 61.91, 61.48, 63.94, 60.07, 62.63, 61.71 and 59.22, weight of valuable cuts 68.6, 67.3, 69.1, 68.3, 61.5, 71.2, 64.0 and 57.9, percentage of bone in the right half-carcass 16.8, 16.2, 16.4, 15.3, 16.4, 15.7, 16.4 and 17.8, weight of kidney fat 5.3, 6.8, 7.5, 6.4, 11.0, 10.7, 9.1 and 12.0 kg, and protein percentage in the longissimus dorsi muscle 20.26, 20.68, 20.67, 20.63, 20.73, 20.51, 20.68 and 20.84.
