Haemolymph ecdysone concentrations in Hyalophora cecropia pupae, dauer pupae and adults

Hemolymph ecdysone concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in diapausing pupae, pharate adults, adults and chilled dauer pupae. The concentration in diapausing pupae after 6 mo. chilling (5.35 pg/.mu.l) increased dramatically after 3 days at 27.degree. C (> 200 pg/.mu.l) and then decreased to low levels in adult females (1.63 pg/.mu.l). In adult males ecdysone was undetectable in all except 1 animal. Dauer pupae showed a decrease from 6.1 to 1.7 pg/.mu.l 1 day after being transferred from 6 to 27.degree. C. Over 3 days the value increased to 3.19 pg/.mu.l and remained constant for > 1 yr. Diapausing pupae with and without brain neurosecretory cells maintain a low concentration of ecdysone in the hemolymph.
