Histophysiological characteristics of the subcommissural organ of ewes over the annual cycle

A series of studies were made of the subcommissural organ in the diencephalon of ewes at all stages of the annual cycle. The organ was shown to be formed by highly prismatic ependymal cells with PAS-positive secretory granules, and appeared to form Reissner's fibre by apical secretion into the third ventricle. Biometry showed the largest volume of ependymal nuclei in the months with reduced ovarian function, and low daytime temperature.
