Histoplasmosis in Kenya: isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum from cave soil

Histoplasmosis in Kenya: isolation of Histoplasma capsulatum from cave soil

Kenya Veterinarian 2(2): 39-41

Histoplasmosis is usually a pulmonary disease although cutaneous or disseminated forms might occasionally occur in some patients. The causative agent is a dimorphic fungus, Histoplasma capsulatum. Its yeast form grows intracellularly in the reticuloendothelial system whereas the mycelial form is a soil saprophyte. Men and animals contract infection after inhaling the dust that is contaminated with highly infective spores and mycelial fragments.
