The Department of Trade is responsible for administering the safeguarding provisions of the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973, and the procedures for disposal of what is recovered under Part IX of the Merchant Shipping Act 1894. The appropriate parts of these Acts are simply explained. The aim is to protect this part of the common heritage by ensuring that any historic discoveries made underwater are subsequently made accessible to all.
