Seed yields from plots of Melilotus alba caged with honeybees averaged 291.6 kg/ha, and from plots from which bees were excluded 0.9 kg/ha. Average nectar secretion was 462.6 kg/ha, giving 238.6 kg sugar/ha. Although nectar production of Phacelia (per 100 flowers) was 7 times as high as that of white melilot, it had a lower sugar content; there were also 9.6 times less Phacelia flowers/ha, and honeybee visits per 100 m2 were less frequent.
