Hormonal assessment of bovine parturient paresis

Plasma levels of Ca, P, Mg, free hydroxyproline (HYP), 25-(OH)D, 24,25-(OH)2D, 1,25-(OH)2D, parathyroid hormone (PTH), calcitonin (CT), prolactin (PRL) and oestrogen were monitored from 30 days prepartum to 15 days postpartum in 8 Holstein cows which developed parturient paresis and in 7 normal controls. Prepartum levels of Ca, HYP and CT were lower in the paretic animals, whereas P and oestrogen levels were higher.
