Immune response of swine to infection with transmissible gastroenteritis virus, with reference to colostral immunity

Pregnant sows developed neutralizing antibodies in the colostrum and blood serum, after receiving by mouth either a virulent transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE) virus, or a swine kidney tissue-adapted TGE virus. However, sows vaccinated with the adapted virus could not confer protection on their piglets, while sows vaccinated with virulent virus did. It was shown that the latter sows synthesized predominantly IgA antibodies, while the sows given adapted virus had mainly IgG antibodies.
