On the basis of a short analysis of trends in food, especially cereal production and trade over the past 2 decades, this report identifies some of the main problems arising from the growth in cereal imports of developing countries. Included are uncertainties about the future security of supplies and the level of stocks, transport and handling difficulties and the balance of payments burden on the poorer developing countries.
