Influence of defoliation at harvest time on various vegetative and reproductive characters of strawberry plants

Between 1973 and 1978, eight varieties were defoliated at harvest to assess the consequences of such treatment for mechanical harvesting on the growth and yield of the subsequent crop. Within varieties, no consistent differences in yield or other metrical traits were found between treated and untreated plants over the different years, though a tendency for defoliation to reduce yield was noted. Significant differences did occur in certain years for certain characters in certain varieties.
