Intake and digestibility of fresh sunflowers

Chopped, entire sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus, cv Fransol) were given daily in 2 equal feeds to 8 British Friesian heifers of initial liveweight 180 to 305 kg. The sunflowers were harvested daily, in August in Scotland in bloom with DM 9.5 to 14.3%. Mean daily intake of DM in 21 days was 25.5 g/kg liveweight. Digestibility was estimated during 7 days at the late flowering stage when yields of DM were more than 9 t/ha. DM had fibre 18.9, ash 11.6, protein 12.7 and ether extract 1.9%.
