Investigations on the potential of a parasitic fungus (Verticillium lecanii) for biological control of the greenhouse whitefly (Trialeurodes vaporariorum)

Observations in a commercial glasshouse cucumber crop showed that considerable whitefly control was being exerted by a natural infection with a fungus identified as V. lecanii. The fungus was cultured successfully on a liquid nutrient medium and it sporulated best at 26 deg C. Tests showed that it was also pathogenic to the whitefly parasite Encarsia formosa. Tomato and cucumber plants showed no symptoms of phytotoxicity when inoculated with the fungus.
